Solve security, employment problems now, Afenifere group tells Jonathan
Goodluck Jonathan (2010-present), Presidency Saturday, January 5th, 2013The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to improve his performance on a number of key national issues, including security, employment generation, and economic management.
The ARG also challenged the president to tackle corruption, profligacy of government officials and the sacred cow syndrome, saying only such a move would make his leadership meaningful this year.
Speaking at a recent forum in Lagos to discuss the state of the nation, ARG, though it’s National Chairman, Chief Olawale Oshun, scored the current national leadership low on the issues, adding that the situation of the average Nigerian at the end of last year was worse than the beginning.
Chief Oshun noted that due to the fact that the Federal Government seemed to lack the will to fight corruption or combat insecurity, Nigeria, as evident in various published indices, was one of the worst places in the world to raise a child.
Chief Oshun also called on the Federal Government to stop ethic discrimination, which he claimed had been meted out to the Yoruba race by the Jonathan-led administration.
He insisted that the South-West had been short-changed on a number of national projects which included appointments into key positions, including the total number of the Yoruba among the 792 Customs cadets recently inducted in the country.
“The Yoruba demand to know why discrimination against us is on the increase. We note with verifiable evidence at our disposal, that most routine appointments and recruitments into the public service under this administration completely short-change our people,” the ARG chairman said.
As a way forward, Chief Oshun indicated that it was time for the decentralisation of power such that individual states are given a measure of autonomy to operate and make key economic decisions.
