Airlines delay flights over poor visibility

Nigerian aviation authorities, in the early hours of yesterday, restricted flight operations across the country on account of the effects of the harmattan which occasioned poor visibility.

According to a source, flights were grounded in the early hours on account of the harmattan haze which tore through major airports across the country, reducing flight visibility to below 1,200 metres prescribed for flight by the meteorological agency.

At the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos yesterday, early morning flights were delayed until the weather improved enough for flight operations.

All early morning flights were suspended for over three hours before their resumption at about 9.30am.

The situation led to many early morning passengers stranded at both local and international airports as no flights landed or took off.

The Head of Engineering, Medview Airlines, Mr. Lookman Animashaun said this was the first time flights had to be grounded since the commencement of the harmattan season.
