FRSC, police confirm death of Patience Jonathan’s foster mother
First Ladies, Headlines, Patience Jonathan Wednesday, July 24th, 2013The circumstances surrounding the accident, which claimed the lives of the foster mother of Nigeria’s First Lady, Madam Charity Oba, and that of a 12-year-old in her company, would soon be unravelled, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has promised.
The FRSC’s assurance came just as the Rivers state police command confirmed the death of Madam Oba, adding that her corpse and that of the teenager in the vehicle with her had been deposited at Kpaima Mortuary, around Elechi Beach area of Diobu, Mile One, Port Harcourt.
The spokesperson of the state police command, Angela Agabe (DSP), also confirmed that two other persons, the driver and a middle-aged woman, who were in the vehicle when the accident occurred, were rushed to a private hospital in the GRA area of Port Harcourt.
Speaking on the accident, the Port Harcourt Sector Commander of the FRSC, Dr Kayode Olagunju, confirmed the incident, but said the cause of the accident would be disclosed at the end of the ongoing investigation on it.
“For now, we cannot say what caused the accident. We are still investigating and will definitely let you know the cause when we conclude the investigation”, Olagunju said.
However, a senior FRSC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said overspeeding by the driver of the vehicle could not be ruled out as the main cause of the accident.
“Though, I was not among the first set of FRSC officials to arrive at the scene of the accident, but I saw the vehicle veer off the road and tumble into the bush, you will know that the driver was actually on high speed when he lost control of the car”, the official said.
Meanwhile, wife of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Hajiya Titi Abubakar, has expressed her condolences to the First Lady on the death of her mother.
In a letter of condolence she released in Abuja yesterday, Hajiya Abubakar said she was personally touched by the sudden and unfortunate death of the First Lady’s mother.
According to Hajiya Abubakar, a mother’s love is the deepest experience in the life of her children and for that reason, she said, Nigerians should connect to the First Lady with a sense of sympathy and empathy.
Hajiya Abubakar said as a child, she experienced a mother’s love and understood what it meant to lose a mother at whatever age.
