Six dead in Kaduna unrest

Six people suspected to be Fulani herds men were reported killed today and an unspecified number of cows stolen in Bungel village, Kajim District in Marwa Chiefdom of Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, North-West Nigeria.

The Secretary Mobgal Fulbe Development Association, Kaduna State, Ahmad Mairiga Yandeh, said the incident, which also resulted in many houses being set ablaze, started on Saturday and continued until Sunday afternoon.

Yandeh said: “Numerous houses are on fire and theft of cattle has been reported. The few security agents on ground have confirmed to me that they cannot contain the situation.

“Report just reaching me has it that out of those 10 who went on grazing and their cows are missing. One of the six that survived with gunshot injury on his hand has been rescued and is on admission at Bima Hospital, opposite Building Materials Hospital Angulu, Jos, Plateau State. His name is Ibrahim Yusuf (Babayo).

“We wish to appeal to the His Excellency, the Kaduna State Governor, the Inspector General of Police, Commandant of the JTF, to send urgent re-enforcement to the troubled spot to help rescue the already bad situation.”

Yandeh gave the names of Ardo Agoji, Ahmed Haruna, Pate Kogi, all in Bungel village, Kajim District, among the dead. He added that the 10 Fulani youths who took their cattle for grazing in Sabon Gari District are missing and their cows confiscated.

“I just spoke with the DPO of the LGA, and he appealed for re-enforcement to arrest the situation. I also spoke with Mallam Isah Bako, who doubles as the Branch Chairman of both Mobgal Fulbe Development Association & Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Kaura LGA, who also confirmed to me now on the ongoing wanton killing and destruction of properties of the Fulanis as well as theft of their cattle,” Yandeh stated.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kaduna State Command, DSP Aminu Lawal, while confirming the incident said reports available indicated only two dead and four injured.

He said poor telephone network in the area is hampering their efforts in contacting those in the area.

“Security has however been beefed up by the combined effort of security forces on ground,” the PPRO said.
