Recession: Federal retirees demand review of pensions

Friday Olokor, Abuja
Civil servants who have retired from the federal public service have demanded an upward review of the pension of civil servants nationwide in line with Section 173 (3) of the constitution.
The retirees under the aegis of Association of Federal Public Service Retirees, said the constitution provided that pensions should be reviewed every five years or anytime salaries of workers salaries were reviewed.
They also called on the Federal Government to pay the 33 per cent increment in the arrears of civil servants in the interest of equity and fairness.
The demand for review has also been interpreted to be due to the ongoing economic recession in the country.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Vice Chairman of AFPSR, Geoffrey Chima, said the review had been due since July 2015.
He said, “We, the members of the association hereby call on the Federal Government to please, pay the remaining 30 months arrears of the 33 per cent pension increment owed the civil pensioners in Nigeria, having recently paid some to the paramilitary pensioners comprising of customs, immigration and prisons.
