Nigeria: Rape convicts escape castration in proposed federal law

(NNP) Rapists and would-be rapists in Nigeria must be celebrating after the House of Representatives rejected a notion that rapists be castrated as part of a suite of recommendations in a proposed bill to stem the spate of rape in the country. The notion, put forward by Mr. James Faleke, ran into troubled waters when the Speaker of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, asked the member what will happen to an older female who rapes a younger man. This question drew loud laughter among members as the member had no response. On this note, members voted against the recommendation. The House, however, resolved to honour sexual assault victims in the next legislative sitting on Tuesday and asked all members to dress in black.

Last week, Osun State House of Assembly passed the toughest law against rape in the country by recommending life sentence for convicted rapists and 14 years for attempted rape.
