Canada makes it easier for parents to pass on Canadian citizenship
Africa & World Politics, Canadian Politics, Headlines, NNP News Friday, July 10th, 2020(NNP) The government of Canada on Thursday made it easier for parents whose children do not have a biological/genetic link to them in cases of surrogacy to pass on their citizenship to their children who were born outside of Canada. The Liberal government of Justin Trudeau updated the legal definition of “parent” that had for many years blocked parents who had children born abroad through surrogacy to be able to pass on their citizenship. In the old law, only children born abroad with one or both parents being Canadian(s) are able to receive automatic citizenship. The updated law provides that the parent(s) must be the legal guardian(s) of the child at birth for citizenship to be granted.
