1 killed, 14 injured in robbers induced accident in Benin – Gov sacks more aides

A motor accident caused by armed robbers yesterday claimed the life of one person in Benin, while 14 others who sustained varying degrees of injuries were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH),

The accident reportedly occurred at about 12pm yesterday at the Benin bye-pass when two buses had a head-on collision while trying to escape from armed robbers who were operating on the road.

The injured passengers were rushed to the Accident and Emergency ward of UBTH by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and were received at the hospital by the Coordinator-General of the Save Accident Victim Association of Nigeria (SAVAN), Dr. Eddy Ehikhamenor. Driver of one of the buses involved in the accident, Mr. Austin Okeke said he was returning from Lagos to the East when they encountered the armed robbers at the Benin bye-pass.

Mr. Okeke, who also sustained injuries, explained that all he could remember was that he tried to make a u-turn to avoid the armed robbers. His bus was marked YP 619 Enugu. Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday relieved more government officials of their appointments.

According to a special announcement issued by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Peter Okhiria, those affected are Tom Adodo, Transition Committee Chairman, Igueben Local Government Area and Tony Momodu, Transition Committee Chairman, Esan Central Local Government Area, Mr Efosa Urhoghide, Special Adviser, Legal Matters Mr Phillip Olumese (JP), chairman Edo State Broadcasting Service Board and Mr Frank Erewele, chairman, Edo State Water Board.

The statement directed the Transition Committee chairmen to hand over all government property in their possession to the Head of Service of their respective local governments, while the others including those earlier affected are to hand over all government property in their possession to the permanent secretary (Administration) within 24 hours.

Governor Oshiomhole had on Wednesday sacked two commissioners and some special advisers from his cabinet. The sack of the government appointees, according to top governments source was not unconnected with the failure of the affected officials to deliver their areas to the ACN during last Saturday’s National Assembly elections.
