Nigerian military personnel released by Burkina Faso arrive in Ghana

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has said that Nigerian soldiers recently released by Burkina Faso have arrived at an Air Force base in Accra, Ghana.

Tuggar disclosed this in a post on X on Friday evening, confirming the safe arrival of the soldiers in the Ghanaian capital.

He wrote, ““I can confirm that the pilots and crew of NAF C-130 (913) have safely arrived at the Air Force Base in Accra. The successful outcome reflects Nigeria’s commitment to diplomacy, regional cooperation, and the leadership of @NGRPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR @officialABAT , in resolving sensitive matters through dialogue.”

The soldiers were detained after their aircraft made an unscheduled landing in Bobo-Dioulasso on December 8 due to a technical fault, shortly after departing Lagos en route to Portugal.

Burkina Faso’s military authorities subsequently held both the personnel and the aircraft over alleged airspace violations, describing the incident as a breach of the country’s sovereignty.

Investigations conducted by the Confederation of Sahel States in collaboration with Burkinabe officials reportedly found that the aircraft lacked prior authorisation to enter Burkinabe airspace.

Following several days of diplomatic engagements, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar to Ouagadougou to engage Burkinabe authorities and secure the soldiers’ release.
