Kano: Hotels increase prices by 100 per cent

TO avoid being caught unawares during and after today’s election, a large number of people are relocating to Sabongari, an area predominantly populated by non-indigenes.Consequently, the price of hotel accommodation has increased by over 100 per cent.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited some of the hotels at Sabongari, people were seen booking for rooms, not minding that the price had skyrocketed.

Mr Moses Aboderin, who resided in Shagari quarters, said he decided to come to Sabongari for security reasons, saying that he had already booked for two rooms for his family of four.He noted that he was not deterred by the high price being charged for accommodation by the hotel because, according to him, life is more important
than any other thing.

Madam Eunice Edwin, whose husband was recently transferred to a town in the Southern part of the country, told the Nigerian Tribune that her husband directed her to relocate to Sabongari because he believed Hadejia area, where she was staying, was not safe for now. She added that her husband had given her enough money to pay for hotel accommodation.

Also, Hajiya Ibrahim, who hails from Auchi, Edo State, said she was at Sabongari to take cover and to avoid running helter-skelter like she did during the last post-election crisis which caught her unawares.

When the Nigerian Tribune asked some hoteliers why they increased the price of accommodation in their hotels, they said it was not deliberate but intended to take care of some expenses they would incur.

According to one of the hoteliers, unlike a normal day when an individual pays for and occupies one room, this time around, no fewer than five persons occupy a room and “we have to agree because we all know the reason for them to be here.

“This means that the service that is meant for a single person or two will now be shared. large number of people occupying the room and we have to make them convenient hence the reason to increase the price for accommodation.”
