Akala approves N18,000 minimum wage for workers

GOVERNOR Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State, yesterday, approved the payment of N18,000 minimum wage for workers in the state.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Akala, Mr. Abraham Ojo, said the Commissioner for establishment, Training and Poverty Alleviation, Jelili Agboola announced this in Ibadan, in a briefing at the end of the State Executive Council, SEC, meeting.

According to the Commissioner, the approval for the payment of the N18,000 minimum wage was agreed upon by both the representatives of the labour union and the State Government.

He explained that the labour presented a table at the meeting which was ratified by both the labour and the SEC, stressing that the payment of the new minimum wage will take effect from May 1st 2011.

Also briefing, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Nureni Adeniran told newsmen that the newly completed liaison office in Ikeja, Lagos will be commissioned today by the State Governor, even as a new Head of the Oyo State Civil Service, Alhaji Tajudeen Olasunkanmi Aremu was sworn-in by Governor Alao-Akala to replace Alhaja Kudirat Adeleke who has disengaged from the State Civil service.

In his address at the occasion Governor Akala said the appointment of Alhaji Aremu was based on his personal merit and not on religious or any extraneous consideration.

He charged the new Head of Service to see his appointment as an opportunity to serve and not to enrich himself unjustly or pursue personal primordial interest that could bring disrepute and tarnish the image of the civil service.

The Governor implored the new Head of Service to give exemplary leadership to the civil service, urging him to forge a good and harmonious relationship with all the Permanent Secretaries and give them advice when necessary.

He said his administration had within the last four years impacted positively on the lives of the people of the State through the provision of infrastructure which had enhanced the economic growth of the State and commended the immediate past Head of Service, Alhaja Adeleke, for repositioning the State civil service as an effective machinery for the implementation of government policies and programmes, adding that she instilled discipline into the state civil service.
