Jonathan to Attend Ugandan President’s Inauguration

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday joined 31 other African Heads of State invited to the swearing-in of Ugandan President, Yoweri  Museveni, in Kampala.

Some of the other Heads of State who are also expected at the event scheduled to hold at Kololo Independence Ground, Kampala are Presidents Mwai Kibaki of Kenya,  Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, Ismail Guelle of Djibouti and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.
Museveni won the Ugandan presidential election of February 18 with 68 per cent of the eight million votes cast, while his main rival, Kizza Besigye of Forum for Democratic Change, came second with 26 per cent of the votes.

Museveni who has been in office for 25 years, since Jan 26, 1986, would be sworn in for another term of five years on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian High Commissioner in Uganda, Mr. Fidel Ayogu, has expressed happiness that Uganda, is the first country President Jonathan is visiting after his victory at the April presidential poll in Nigeria.

Speaking with State House correspondents on the advance team of President Jonathan in Kampala on yesterday, Ayogu said it was a privilege for him and the entire Nigerian community in Uganda for the their president to grace the occasion.

He said: “It is a privilege for me as an ambassador to Uganda and the entire Nigerian community here that Uganda is the first country the president is visiting after his election.

“I have to say that I am very happy and the host country is glad about this and it is going to heighten the credibility level of the host country.’’

Ayogu described the conduct of free, fair and credible polls in Nigeria in April as “a rebirth of the country’’ noting that it boosted the recognition of the country in the comity of nations.
