Amosun promises free education, health

Senator Ibikunle Amosun yesterday took the oath of office as the fourth civilian governor of Ogun State with a pledge to transform the state beyond what his predecessors left.

Amosun in his acceptance speech shortly after the state Chief Judge, Mr. Charles Oluremi Jacobs administered the oath of office on him at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta also announced free education for both primary and secondary schools in the state. He also announced free ante and post-natal health for pregnant women and children between age zero and five years old.

For the ages, the governor also announced free health services for the people of the state over 70 years of age. Education at tertiary institutions, according to him, would also be drastically pursued to meet with the yearnings and aspirations of both students and parents. During the ceremony, which was witnessed by an unprecedented crowd, the governor lamented that Ogun was the most indebted of states where new governors were taking over.

The governor also gave the indication that he might probe his predecessor, Governor Gbenga Daniel, assuring that all his predecessor’s last minutes deals would be investigated. His words: “Let me assure the good people of Ogun State that all illegal deals and last minute abuse of power by the last administration will not go un-reviewed. We will scrutinise all that has been done and then act in the best public interest.

“We will take stock of what we inherited from the previous administration, review them and determine their relevance to our goals. Unviable projects or projects designed to score cheap political points will be scrapped. So will all agencies and programmes with doubtful output and benefits.”

Amosun who lamented that some legacy institutions and patrimony in the state were treated as if they were personal properties of his predecessor, ordered that two state-owned electronic media, should revert immediately to their original names of Ogun State Radio Corporation (OGBC) and and Ogun State Television (OGTV).
