Eagles’ performance justifies Siasia’s appointment – SWAN

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ebonyi chapter, has said that the performance of the Super Eagles so far has justified the clamour by Nigerians for Samson Siasa as the coach.

Reacting to the Eagles 4-1 victory over Argentina in Abuja on Wednesday, Ajah Okike, the SWAN chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki that the victory was a sign of better things in future.

Okike commended the Super Eagles for recording the country’s first victory over Argentina at the senior level.

“Siasia has instilled the needed on and off-field discipline in the players and which made them play like a team in all the matches they had played under him.

“The boys now report early to camp unlike the situation in the past and play with a high level of maturity and patriotism,” he said.

Okike noted that the greatest attributes of the present team were the selection of the right players and the instilling of high-level confidence in them.

“Siasia, unlike previous indigenous coaches, invited only players that are fit and committed to the cause of uplifting the team.

“There is now a clear departure from the past when some players disobeyedand  camp rules yet pick shirts during matches.

“The coach has also instilled the needed confidence in the players as they can now confront any team without fear, no matter how highly placed,” the SWAN chairman said.

He called on all Nigerians, especially the sporting press, to support the team as they strive to return the country’s soccer to its glorious days.

Similarly, Desmond Ome, Secretary, Ebonyi Football Association, has advised the Eagles not to be complacent on Sunday when they confront Ethiopia in a Nations Cup qualifier.

“The victory over Argentina should motivate the players to give their best against Ethiopia as any form of complacency would be counter-productive,’’ he said. (NAN)
