N628m Allegation: House Clears Patricia Etteh
House, Latest Politics, Legislature Friday, June 3rd, 2011In an emotion-laden end to the sixth National Assembly session, the House of Representatives in a last ditch effort, cleared the name of its former speaker, Patricia Olubunmi Etteh, of allegation of N628m graft which led to her resignation.
In a long, moving speech, Etteh challenged the House to revisit the issue in a bid to clear her name. Etteh said the house in any case owed her an apology because according to her, nothing incriminating was discovered following investigation into the allegation of corruption by the house members.
Addressing the House at the valedictory session marking to wind up sixth National Assembly session, Etteh said, “I have never stolen one naira that belongs to this honourable House or the Nigeria for that matter.
“I have not been indicted and want a resolution that if I am guilty, it should not be hidden but if I am not, after 12 years of being in this House, it is only proper to state it,” Etteh added.
She urged the clerk of the National Assembly as well as her colleagues to produce any evidence that shows that she was indicted of any corrupt practice or clear her of any involvement.
In a seeming apology to the former speaker, the chairman of the House committee on Business and Rules, Hon. Ita Enang regretted the turnaround of events. He moved a motion that “In view of publications in the media about members, especially the former speaker, Patricia Etteh, I move that There was no record or proceeding that this house ever indicted Etteh of any wrong doing.”
