Reps reverse decision on female speaker, elect Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto)

Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (PDP) Sokoto state has emerged as the new
speaker of the 7th session of the House of Representatives of Nigeria.

He defeated Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola who is popularly tagged as the
candidate of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP and the presidency.

Tambuwal was a deputy chief whip in the 6th session of the House of
Representatives. He ran against Hon. Mulikat Akande in defiance to the
endorsement of the ruling PDP.

The new speaker emerged with 252 votes to defeat Mulikat Akande who polled
90 votes, a winner needs a simple majority of 181 votes to emerge as speaker.

Also, Emeka Ihedioha emerged unopposed as the deputy speaker.

Earlier, Senator David Mark was returned unopposed as senate president of
Nigeria. Senator Ike Ekweremadu was also re-elected as the deputy senate
president.

The election was conducted peacefully during the inauguration of the 7th
session of the senate.
