Boko Haram kills 4 in beer parlour attack

Maiduguri – The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that four persons were killed on Sunday by suspected Boko Haram militants at a drinking joint in Bulumkutu, Maiduguri even as the Islamic sect has given conditions to the government for laying down their arms

Malam Lawal Abdullahi, the command’s Public Relations Officer, said yesterday in Maiduguri that the suspected militants invaded the joint while the victims were drinking.

“They raided the joint and shot the victims who were busy drinking. All the victims died even after some were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for help,” Abdullahi said, adding that the militants successfully carried out the attack because it was not properly secured by the owner.

The attack came a few hours after the militants gave the Borno State government conditions to be met before any dialogue could take place.

Meanwhile, in a statement distributed around Maiduguri by members of Boko Haram, the sect repeated its demand that strict sharia Islamic law be applied across northern Nigeria and that all of its detained members be released.

It called for the resignation of the government of Borno State, of which Maiduguri is the capital, and demanded the prosecution of the former state governor and senior security officials for the killing of its leader in 2009.

“If the Federal Government cannot fulfil these conditions, we cannot participate in any dialogue,” the statement said.

“The proposed deployment of additional troops to the state  would not deter us from the ongoing guerrilla attacks in any parts of the country,” it said.

But someone else claiming to be the sect spokesman, identifying himself as Abu Darda on the Hausa-language service of the BBC, had last month ruled out talks with government.
