Delta State University spends N13m on diesel monthly

WARRI – VICE-CHANCELLOR of the Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka, Prof. Eric A. Arubayi, Wednesday, stated that one of the greatest challenges facing the institution is paucity of fund and commended Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for his wonderful and unrelenting financial assistance to the University.

He also disclosed that administrative cost of running the University is so astronomical that it takes a whopping N13m to power the lighting system in the Abraka campus of the school and appealed to wealthy Deltans and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the Institution as obtained in others states of the Federation.

Speaking to newsmen at his office for the first time since assumption of office one and half year ago, Prof. Arubayi said even in the face of paucity of fund, the management has been able to build six (6) lecture hall/theatres to ease the chronic lack of lecture hall that was endemic in the school since inception.

According to him, 8 sewage systems that has been damage over 5 years ago that have left the school in very bad state and foul atmosphere has also been completely re-built through internally generated revenue through which most physical development projects in the institution has been executed.

He expressed deep regret that while wealthy individuals in other states of the Federation build lecture halls and hostels including laboratories and IT centres in their names in schools located in their states, wealthy Deltans and even corporate bodies have not deemed it fit to emulate these gestures and commended Governor Uduaghan for his generous financial assistance to the University that have kept them afloat till date.

Prof. Arubayi who further revealed that in his less than two –years in office his administration has provided brand new air-conditioned buses to all the faculties in the institution, also stated that all departments in the school including student affairs have been provided buses to ease transportation system for both staff and students in all the three campuses of the University.

He said the University now own and run its own petrol station to serve both the University and the public with special consideration to the Institution in times of fuel scarcity, saying that even then, they have also put in place a modern examination centre that eliminates examination malpractices to the barest minimum.
