United Nations Security Council has recommended the re-appointment of Mr. Ban Ki-moon as UN Secretary General for  a second consecutive term.

At a closed-door meeting at UN Headquarters in New York, the Council adopted a resolution that Ki-Moon should serve a second-term beginning from January 1, 2012. His current five-year-term ends on December 31, 2011.

The 15-member council, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security, is also saddled with the responsibility of recommending to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary General.

In line with Article 97 of the UN Charter, the General Assembly will now make a decision on the recommendation. The Assembly is expected to vote on his re-appointment before the end of the month.

Indications that Ki-Moon would get the endorsement of the Security Council for a second consecutive term emerged when it became clear that he had no visible challenger.

Also, the five permanent members of the council – United States, Britain, Russia, China and France – with veto power had individually expressed their desire to have Ki-Moon serve another term in office.

Ki-Moon, who had been in office since January 2007, after taking over from an African, Mr. Kofi Annan, had earlier this month declared his intention to seek re-election as UN scribe.

Speaking with UN correspondents on June 6, the UN scribe who was South Korea’s foreign minister had cited his efforts as a bridge-builder among member states, within the organisation’s system, and among a wide variety of global partners, as one of his selling points.

The 67-year-old diplomat also said he would make the challenges of climate change one of his top priorities when he gets re-elected.
