Robbers kill man, pregnant woman in Ekiti
Ekiti, Headlines, State News Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011A man and a pregnant woman have reportedly been killed by armed bandits, suspected to be nomadic herdsmen, on the dilapidated Ado Ekiti-Ijan Road in Ekiti State.
Nigerian Tribune gathered from members of Aduloju farmstead in Ado Ekiti Local Government Area of the state, on Wednesday, that the pregnant woman and the man, said to be a commuter, were killed on Sunday.
Sources in Ijan-Ekiti in Gboyin Local Government Area said they suspected the bandits to be herdsmen who they claimed were found in large numbers in the area, always carrying locally-made guns of various sizes and cutlasses.
The sources also alleged that the robbery on the road, especially at the worst part of the badly damaged road, had been rampant, pointing out that the large expanse of land in Aduloju area provided cover for the marauders.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the unidentified pregnant woman was being conveyed on a motorcycle from Ilupeju community in Gboyin council area to Ado Ekiti when they ran into the armed gang.
According to the sources, the motorcyclist made a U-turn in attempt to escape from the robbers when one of them allegedly shot at the woman from the back, killing her immediately.
The motorcyclist, who narrowly escaped the robbers’ bullet, was said to have immediately fled the scene after the woman had somersaulted from the bike and started bleeding profusely.
The commuter that was killed was said to have resisted the robbers while several others were said to have been injured in the attacks.
