AFCON: Best-rated Nigeria crashes out of tournament after stunning defeat

(NNP) Nigeria’s campaign to lift the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon for the fourth time in history ended today with a 1-0 loss to the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia. The heavily underrated North African side that managed just a win in the group stages, scored in the opening moments of the second half with a volley from outside the box that hit the hand of goalkeeper Okoye and went into the net. Alex Iwobi, who plays for Everton in the English Premier League, was red-carded after coming in to relief Iheanacho in the second half. Iheanacho picked up a yellow card earlier in the game. Iwobi, the former Arsenal hitman, was adjudged to have deliberately stepped on the ankle of an opposing player. The Super Eagles stunned by this defeat, will now regroup for their upcoming encounter with Ghana in a home-away duel in March in the final race for a 2022 World Cup ticket in Qatar.
