Al Shabaab executes two men in Mogadishu
Africa & World Politics Monday, March 7th, 2011Somalia’s extremist group al Shabaab on Sunday afternoon executed two persons they had charged with spying and murder.
The hard-line group had accused one of the men of being part of the Somali government’s intelligence department while the other man was charged with assassinating al Shabaab members.
Speaking at Maslah camp in northeastern Mogadishu where the executions took place, Sheikh Omar, the group’s judge of the Benadir region said, “The Islamic court of Benadir region of al Shabaab has sentenced to death Abdullahi Hajji Mohammed and Abdinasir Hussein Ali after they professed of committing anti-Islamic crimes.”
The accused were executed by a firing squad.
Hundreds of locals, mostly displaced people, were invited to view the execution. People in the village were astonished by the hasty judgment and expressed concern, a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity told All Headline News.
Abdinasir Hussein Ali, one of the deceased, had reportedly defected from al Shabaab in early 2009 and joined Somali military forces. After killing a police officer, he rejoined al Shabaab.
On Jan. 30, al Shabaab militants executed a Somali man in the center of Mogadishu, charging him with being a spy for the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation.
On Oct. 27, the militant group shot and killed two teenage girls in the town of Beletweyne in the Hiran region of central Somalia after accusing the girls of spying for the Somali government.wp_posts
