Pictures: The “Afikpo Chic” and Gov. Okorocha: Angry reactions greet Okorocha’s N5.5m birthday gift to Nigerians

A gift of N5.5m donated by Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, through Member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly representing the Afikpo North East Constituency, Maria Ude Nwachi, has received angry reactions from respondents.

As explained by Ms. Nwachi, Okorocha made the donation as part of activities marking his 55th birthday, and it is meant to be enjoyed by the generality of Nigerians via the social media platform.

On her part, Nwachi, who is popularly known as Afikpo Chic, has devised ways of disbursing the money.

On her Facebook wall, she has put up various notices concerning what would-be beneficiaries should do to have a cut of what she has pejoratively described as “mula” — a vernacular slang meaning “windfall.”

For anyone to benefit from the money, Nwachi put up five quizzes and a long list of criteria, one of which is for applicants to say what they know about the donor, and to also like him on about four social media platforms he maintains.

Spelling out what applicants are expected to do, Nwachi wrote: Contest 5, with N30,000 as prize money, and open to all Nigerians, applicants are expected to respond to a quiz: “What do you know about this man? What do you appreciate or love about him? What can you tell us about the Executive Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha? Interesting facts you wish us to know about him would be appreciated. Chosen comments will take home 30,000 Naira each.”

Contest 4, open to all Nigerians, requires applicants to say what N5,000 could help them solve in the immediate.

Contest 3: For students only: Please, tell us what N15,000 can help you solve as a student.

Contest 2, also open to all Nigerians, requires applicants to say what business they could start with #55,000. Here, a brief business plan is required.

Contest 1, open to all Nigerians, applicants are expected to say how N10,000 will add to their fun and lessen their burden.

Despite what appeared to be a windfall that is there for the asking, though, visitors to Nwachi’s Facebook wall were not impressed, as they used the opportunity to vent their anger against Okorocha’s administrative policies.

Chief among the criticisms is the demolition of the market, and the subsequent relocation of the traders.

Others think the money should have been channelled into paying pensioners in the state.
