As the labour unions in the country threaten to embark on a three day -warning strike over the non implementation of the new minimum wage, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to down tools due to what the union described as unwillingness of government to sign the amended bill on the retirement age of academics.

The Calabar Zone of ASUU had met at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia state to critically review the passage of enabling law increasing the retirement age of academics from 65 to 70 years for those in the professorial cadre and the removal of certain ambiguities from the provisions that allowed professors to retire with full benefits.

The union further reviewed the level of implementation of the earned academic allowances in Universities within the zone as contained in the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

ASUU in a resolution made available to newsmen on Friday in Calabar decried the “unwillingness of government to sign the amended bill which the national assembly has passed since May 2011”, stressing that the action of government has a great consequence on the development of education in the country.
