Boko Haram, MEND Scare ‘Big Men’ From Eagle Square

THE combined effects of the threats by Boko Haram Islamic sect and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) yesterday sent Abuja’s big men away from the Eagle Square.

The two dreaded militia organisations had threatened hell fire at the proposed venue of Nigeria 51st anniversary, which was normally at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

The sprawling Square was built by the Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar administration as an open venue for big official functions.

Constructed by Julius Berger, private sector organs and faith-based organizations have been using the facility, too.

Although the government denied that the ceremony would be low-key due to alleged threats by Boko Haram and MEND, the observance of the historic event was eventually at the Presidential Villa, where a special parade was held.

Security was overwhelming in Abuja yesterday. All public buildings, including several areas of the Federal Secretariat, which overlook the Eagle Square, were heavily guarded.

The Radio House, International Conference Centre, Central Bank of Nigeria, Defence Headquarters, Defence College, National Assembly, Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Courts, and hotels in the city were well guarded.

It was also noticed that most people stayed away from public buildings while many others stayed.

However, the Provincial Headquarters of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) organised a combined prayer session for Nigeria at the church’s Central Parish, Wuse Two.

Other churches also organised prayer sessions in similar fashion.
