Bomb blast: FG task governors on security
Boko Haram, Governors Saturday, June 18th, 2011Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has charged state governors to improve security intelligence and surveillance.
This followed the spate of bomb blasts in the country, including Thursday’s twin incidents that rocked the Nigeria Police Headquarters in Abuja and a house near EYN Church in Damboa, Borno State.
Senator Anyim made the call when he had audience with Governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Suntai, at the weekend.
Anyim said there was possibility that the masterminds of the dastardly act at the Police Headquarters might not be residing in Abuja, noting that security was not the business of the security operatives alone as it involves all, and suggested that the easiest way to tackle the problem was for all Nigerians to be security conscious.
The SGF also tasked parents and traditional rulers to assist by reporting any suspected character within their domain and homes to security agencies.
While describing the incident as unfortunate, Anyim said, “This country belongs to all of us. Let me say that the security of all belongs to all of us. Parents, traditional institutions and all well-meaning Nigerians should rise to the occasion.”
He said since there was no way evil can triumph over good, the country would overcome its problem.
Earlier, Suntai had commiserated with the Federal Government over the unfortunate incident. He also wished the new SGF success in his assignment.
Meanwhile, the SGF has tasked the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) on the need to lead the way in the fight to eradicate the dreadly virus.
He said the fight was a very tasking one, a journey that was still far ahead, and a battle that must be won.
Anyim also challenged the agency to do more in the search for cure, saying that, “NACA must double its efforts to ensure breakthrough in the cure of AIDS, and nothing is wrong if that breakthrough comes from Nigeria.”
NACA Chairman, Prof. Umaru Shehu, had led the delegation accompanied by the agency’s Director General, Prof. John Idoko, and other members of the council.
