Bomb blasts: Nigerian pilgrims in Israel pray against recurring violence
Latest Politics Tuesday, January 4th, 2011Nigerian Christian pilgrims who are currently on pilgrimage in Israel have condemned the recent bomb attacks in Abuja and have intensified prayers against recurring violence in Nigeria.
The pilgrims, who expressed shock when the news of the attacks reached them in the holy land, have persisted in prayers for peace, security and free and fair elections this year.
Ever since the news broke out, no day has passed without the pilgrims praying in groups for God’s intervention in the affairs of the country.
One of the pilgrims, Mrs Grace Obiechina, told the Nigerian Tribune in Israel that it was high time the issue of security topped government’s priority.
She condemned killings in whatever form and warned that the perpetrators of such evil act must face the wrath of God.
Also speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Egypt, a Muslim scholar, who gave his name as Rafat, stated that lack of understanding was the reason some people killed in the name of religion.
He insisted that both Christianity and Islam believe in God and have common descent in Adam and wondered why such killings should persist.
According to him, it would amount to sheer ignorance for people to resort to killing on the account of religion and noted that such acts were forbidden by the Holy Books.
Over 20, 000 Nigerian pilgrims are participating in this year’s exercise, which started on November 13, 2010, and is expected to be drawn to a close on January 30.
Meanwhile, bad weather in Mount Sinai area has continued to prevent most of the pilgrims from climbing the mountain.
Apart from persisting rains and excessive cold, snow-fall has equally worsened the situation as the topmost part of the mountain was said to be too slippery.
Last Sunday also, pilgrims were prevented from assessing the site of Moses’ burning bush as the entrance through the 600 years old Saint Catherine Monastery was closed.
Despite the challenges, the exercise has progressed with other minimal hitches.
