Breaking News: INEC cancels Imo guber elections results – Okorocha was leading…

The Imo State governorship election lived up to its billing, with tension and drama, and has been declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Before then, Governor Ikedi Ohakim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) were running head to head.

Okorocha led in 12 local government areas (LGAs) while Ohakim won in 10. There were issues with results from Ngor Okpala, Egbema and Oguta local government areas leading to outright cancellation by INEC officials. Elections were allegedly not concluded in these areas.
The tension-soaked election had witnessed premature celebrations by APGA supporters. Before the cancellation scores of pre-emptive youths, ostensibly APGA supporters were poised for a showdown with INEC officials, sensing underhand manipulations in favour of the PDP candidate, during the break.
INEC officials sensing danger promptly put off further announcement of result and declared the election inconclusive.

It was not clear last night when elections would be re-conducted in the affected areas.
Scores of APGA supporters had besieged the state headquarters of the INEC in Owerri for the results.
The supporters began to converge on the area in the early hours of the day but were restricted to a section by combat-ready mobile police and military personnel. The expectant supporters intermittently erupted in wild jubilation as the results gradually trickled in, favouring the party.

The crowd, which waited patiently in the hot weather, provided a ready market for hawkers of iced sachet water, popularly called “pure water,” yoghourt and ice-cream. Other items on display included banana, groundnuts, breadfruits, mangoes, oranges and snacks, such as meatpie and gala. There was heavy presence of security men around the premises located on the busy Port Harcourt Road and motorists were diverted to other routes by stern-looking soldiers.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the jubilation later spread into the Owerri metropolis as “false” news rent the air that APGA’s candidate in the election, Chief Okorocha, had won the election.
Jubilant residents, mainly youths, roadside hawkers, artisans, tricycle operators and taxi drivers, men and women went into celebration, flying APGA flags.

Some of the youths who danced round some of the major streets of the city, carrying Okorocha’s campaign handbills and large-size posters, were however, dispersed along the Wetheral Road.
