Breaking News: President Trump impeached by U.S. House of Representatives
American Politics, Headlines, Top Stories Wednesday, December 18th, 2019By New Nigerian Politics – Washington DC – U.S. President Donald J., Trump was today impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives on two articles of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The charges stem from the allegation that the president withheld military aid worth $391 million from Ukraine that had already been approved by the Congress until that country’s president announced an investigation into the business activities in Ukraine of his potential political rival in the 2020 presidential elections, former U.S Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Hunter was on the board of a Ukrainian gas company where he was alleged to be receiving a salary of $50,000 monthly. The democrats-led House accused the president of using his power to influence the upcoming elections in 2020 by asking Ukraine to investigate Biden to diminish Biden’s rise in the polls. He also asked Ukraine to announce an investigation to determine if Ukraine interfered in the 2016 elections. Democrats say this was a plot to absorb Russia of any responsibility in its interference in the 2016 that saw Trump winning the presidency.
Impeachment under the U.S. Constitution does not mean removal from office. The case moves to the U.S. Senate where there will be a trial to determine the president’s innocence or guilt. If found guilty by the Senate, the president is removed from office. However, given that the Senate is controlled by his Republican party, it is not expected that he will be convicted. Trump becomes only the third president to be impeached after Andrew Jackson in the 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 for lying under oath about having sex with a young intern in the Oval Office. Neither of the president was convicted in the Senate.wp_posts
