Canadian government braces for possible U.S. election fallout
American Politics, Canadian Politics, Headlines Sunday, November 1st, 2020(NNP) The Canadian government is reportedly preparing for assorted political scenarios that may play out in the United States in the aftermath of the most anticipated elections. The preparation has been ongoing in case there is spillover violence or other political situations that may need its attention. Sources say that the Canadian government will rely on the expertise of the Canadian embassy staff in Washington who will guide Ottawa’s reaction to any possible fallout.
In this regard, the Canadian ambassador, Kirsten Hillman, who has been in almost daily contact with the prime minister’s office will serve as the main advisor to the Canadian government. The ambassador who has been in constant contact with key staffers in the US administration to glean important information, is in a better position to advise the government. Canadian prime ministers of all parties have traditionally stayed out of American politics, offering generic statements at such sensitive times to ensure continued friendly relationship with the Americans. The U.S. is Canada’s largest trading partner. Americans go to the polls on Nov. 3.
