Church Closed After Death of Two Members

Benue State government, on Friday, ordered the closure of Glory of Majesty Church in Makurdi metropolis, following the killing of two members when part of the church collapsed during a heavy down-pour during the week.

The state urban development authority ordered the closure on Friday, following the development and also said that the organisation had earlier given orders to stop work on the building having discovered that sub- standard materials were being used.

Chief town planner, Sam Omale, who spoke on behalf of the general manager of the Urban Development authority, Patrick Aruta, said that the closure was necessary to forestall more calamities among the members of the church.

Omale ordered that the church should submit all documents relating to the structure, engineering and maintenance to the urban development authority for vetting by professionals stating that the order of closure will remain until approval is given for the development of the church.

Founder of the church, Evangelist Mike Ewache, had told newsmen that the construction of the gigantic project had gulped over N40million. He denied that sub-standard materials were used, stressing that the work is being supervised by the state ministry of works.

Two persons who happened to be cousins of the founder and his wife lost their lives when the building collapsed on Tuesday, while 15 people were said to be working on the church before the collapse.

Some of the members, who spoke to Saturday Tribune, however, condemned the closure of the church stating that the development did not warrant the government order slammed on the church.

The gigantic church, according to the founder when completed will accommodate 20,000 worshippers.
