Delegate storms PDP convention with dagger

From ROMANUS UGWU, Abuja

But for the prompt intervention of  security operatives, a middle-aged man, Ishiaku Abdullahi would have unleashed terror on the delegates and other participants at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention when he stormed Eagle Square Abuja, venue of the event, with dagger, yesterday.

Ishiaku, who introduced himself as a staffer of Oando Filling Station at Jabi Primary School, Abuja, had beaten the security network outside the venue, including the highly fortified entrance gate with his accredited delegate tag before luck ran out on him.

He was almost beating the last security check when eagle-eyed operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) stopped him for physical search, but on discovery that his game was up, he went berserk, pulled out the six feet inch dagger and threatened to stab anybody on his way before he was subdued. Although on interrogation, he could not explain his mission or why he stormed the convention venue with a weapon, he, however, told the security operatives, raining punches and kicks on him, that he came to the convention on special invitation from somebody already inside the venue.

Interestingly, as the security formations took turn to extort relevant information from him, applying all manners of disciplinary measures, Isiaku, looking very subdued, kept brandishing an identity card to prove his innocence and claims that he is a staffer of Oando in Jabi. Speaking in Hausa language, Sunday Sun correspondent who was at the scene of the incident but was denied request to speak to Isiaka, however heard him repeatedly emphasizing: “Look at my ID card, I’m a staff of Oando Filling Station in Jabi. I’m a security man with the filling Station. I came here because somebody invited me but he is inside already.”

The operatives ignored his appeals, claiming that he had stormed the venue in company with two others but while his gang was lucky to escape, they arrested him while threatening to stab the two SSS operatives that searched and discovered the dagger on him.

However, there was a mild drama, when the security formations became sharply divided over which one arrested him or which one to take further charge of the interrogation outside the venue, resulting in one operative seizing the dagger while the other took possession of his wallet and his telephone set. After about 30 minutes of his arrest and interrogations, three stern-looking, gun- wielding men from the Special Force (SF) of the SSS finally whisked him out of the venue in a waiting Sport Utility Vehicle with registration number Abuja AG 651 RSH at exactly 12.56pm.
