Eagles’ in Fresh Obama Cup Row
Headlines, Soccer, Sports Friday, February 11th, 2011NIGERIA’S participation in an invitational Obama Cup in the United States of America is hanging in the balance following a withdrawal of most of the teams from the competition.
The country’s ‘B’ team is scheduled to depart for the US this weekend for the tournament, but top officials have informed MTNFootball.com the trip is now “dicey” as the American consulate in Abuja has only released a handful of passports with entry visas belonging to the team.
“The trip is very dicey now and we would have to wait till the end of yesterday (Friday) to really confirm whether the team will take part in the competition,” disclosed a top official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
It was also gathered that only two countries are now confirmed for the eight-team competition.
An agent of two of the players bound for the US was furious with the latest uncertainties surrounding the tournament.
However, one of the players picked for the competition informed that the team’s training camp in Abuja had been closed and players had been told they will now get together again by Wednesday.
The Obama Cup is to kick off on Tuesday.
Last week, the NFF dismissed media reports that said the competition was a scam.
