Efe Ambrose banned for World Cup clash
Headlines, Soccer, Sports Thursday, March 14th, 2013Celtic defender Efe Ambrose will miss Nigeria World Cup qualifier against Kenya next weekend because of accumulated bookings.
Coach Stephen Keshi had called up Ambrose, who played as a make-shift right back during last month’s Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
However, an official statement from the Nigeria football Federation (NFF) on Thursday said Ambrose will miss the match in Calabar after he got a yellow card against Namibia in a World Cup tie in June last year and was also yellow carded away to Malawi in Blantyre in the same competition.
New Enugu Rangers signing Chibuzor Okonkwo is thus expected to stake a stronger claim for the problematic right back position in the absence of the suspended Ambrose.
Meanwhile, officials confirmed that Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke, will be presented with the AFCON trophy at his office on the evening of Thursday, March 21.
NFF president Aminu Maigari will lead the Super Eagles delegation to the Government House.
It has also been confirmed that following assurance of security by the Cross River State Government, the trophy will be on display at the U. J. Esuene Stadium for the duration of the World Cup qualifying match.
The Eagles will fly into Calabar, CrossRiverState capital, on Monday for their final preparations ahead of the Kenya clash.
