Egypt sentences ex president Morsi to death

By Our Reporter–The first democratically elected and former Egyptian President, Mohammed Morsi has been sentenced to death over mass prison break in 2011.

Following the latest ruling, the Egyptian’s highest religious authority, Grand Mufti, is expected to consider and decide whether the execution would be carried out or not, just as all death sentence rulings must first reach him.
The former North African President was among over 100 other suspects – defendants likely to be sentenced to death over their role in mass jail breaks during the 2011 uprising (Arab Spring) against former ousted President Hosni Mubarak, who ruled the country for 28 years.
Although, convictions can still be appealed, regardless of the Grand Mufti’s endorsement, yet, former President Morsi’s supporters have insisted the cases pressed against him were politically motivated and an attempt to legalize Fatai al-Sisi led coup against Morsi’s Government.
Sisi succeeded himself as the incumbent democratically elected Egyptian’s President, in a general election conducted in May 2014. The exercise witnessed a shocking 46 per cent turn out of the voters.
Morsi, a member of the prominent Muslim Brotherhood movement, was sacked in a Military coup spearheaded by the incumbent al-Sisi in July 2013. The group had since been proscribed by al-Sisi led Military junta, while thousands of its members, leaders and supporters, were either arrested, tried, sentenced or convicted by the Courts.wp_posts
