The Association of Retired Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARAN) and the Society for International Relations Awareness  (SIRA) has commended the Federal Government over its firm stance during its recent row with the South African Government.

This commendation was made by the two groups in two different press statements yesterday. The ex envoys under the aegis of the Association of Retired Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARAN) condemned the deportation of the 125 Nigerians in spite of the country’s contributions to the anti apartheid struggle.

Backing the Federal Government on its policy during the face off, ARAN urged  “ both sides to exercise restraint and avoid tit-for-tat diplomacy,” adding, “the two brotherly countries should make use of existing machinery for bilateral cooperation in the interest of both nations.”

SIRA in a press statement by Prof. Nuhu Yaqub,  Chairperson; and Owei Lakemfa, SIRA’s Public Affairs Committee Chairman,  said: “Foreign powers may seek to profit from the disagreements. SIRA therefore called on both countries to meet urgently and resolve their differences in the interest of their citizens and the continent.
