Ex-Gov Akume quits PDP over undemocratic practices

There are indications that the immediate past governor of Benue State, Senator George Akume, has quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), just as Honourables Orker Jev and Mzenda Iho, representing Buruku and Katsina Ala/Logo/Ukum federal constituencies of the state in the House of Representatives have described the PDP primaries as undemocratic and a sham.

Akume, who represents Benue North West senatorial district in the Senate, on Tuesday night, said he was withdrawing from the party’s primaries for aspirants to the National Assembly for glaring display of undemocratic practices.

Also at a press conference addressed by the two legislators, on Wednesday, they said they had withdrawn their candidature from the party’s primaries because of the glaring display of partiality against them and those who were not in the good books of the powers that be in the state.

They stated that their next line of action would be made public after due consultations with their wellwishers and supporters, ruling out their continued identification with the PDP.

In a press statement, signed by Senator Akume, the senator disclosed that: “I have decided to withdraw my participation from the National Assembly primaries on the platform of PDP scheduled for Wednesday, 5th January, 2011.”

Senator Akume, who has been engaging in harsh criticism of his successor, Governor Gabriel Suswam, stated that he would take a decision on his next political action after consultations with people of the state, especially residents of Benue North West senatorial district.
