Former Minister of Education and Vice-President of the World Bank, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has taken to social media, including the micro-blogging website, Twitter, to speak out against rape.
The former minister, who recently reprimanded popular comedian, Basketmouth, for a rape joke on his Facebook page, on Wednesday, first posted at about 9 pm, “Enough! It is time to act on this epidemic.”
A few minutes later, she called on an anti-rape group on Twitter, Stand to End Rape, asking, “Can you take the lead in organising a meeting on rape epidemic as soon as possible? We must take on this scourge.”
She explained that it was urgent to tackle the rising trend of rape, proposing that a meeting among activists be scheduled.
Soon after, she continued, “Please find all the coalition partners and, first, schedule a tweet-meet. My schedule is tight but I will do my best to realign. Priority action is to secure immediate and effective response from the Ministry of Justice, law enforcement agencies and the judiciary.”
She added, “We must, especially for our little daughters, act now. That is what governments do – act swiftly!”
She explained that an action-focused meeting was urgent to tackle the problem of rape.
