Fake INEC Officials Arrested

The Nigerian police, “A” Division, Ughelli, Delta state have arrested two fake INEC officials in Ughelli North local government area of the state in possession of some DDC machines.

One of the suspects who gave his name as Mr. Samuel Amiaze said he is a youth corps member attached to Ekpakamre Secondary School, Ughelli South.

According to him, “I was dispatched to Orere community in Ughelli South LGA for the ongoing voter registration exercise,” adding that the community has three registration centers. He stated that when they began to experience battery failure, they were advised to move the machine batteries to where they could be charged since the community did not have any means of electricity.

Amiaze disclosed to news men that three corps and two non corps members were assigned to each machine for safety purpose, “when the problem of battery arose, we were advised to take the machine to the President-General of the community, one Mr. Joseph, who resides in Ughelli so that sons and daughters of Orere community residing in Ughelli township and its environs could be registered.”

He further stated that “upon the failure of the batteries, we were asked to take them to Mr. Joseph, who resides at no 37 Ihwrekpokpo community where we were caught.”

A community leader, (name withheld) who spoke with newsmen said, when information of the illegal registration filtered in that some DDC machines were brought to the community for illegal registration, they immediately asked their youths to fish out the culprits.

“Those that went there for registration came back to tell us that after registration, they gave them good sum of money; that is how we were able to make fruitful efforts,”  he said.

The Divisional Police Officer, Ughelli ‘A’ Division, Mr. Chris Sorgbara (CSP), who confirmed the arrest said that investigations were in top gear to fish out the perpetrators of this electoral crime, saying they must be brought to face the law.
