FBI foil coup plot to overthrow a U.S. state government and kidnap its female governor

(NNP) The FBI announced Thursday that it has foiled an advanced plot by two militia groups to overthrow the U.S. state government of Michigan and kidnap its female Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer. The FBI has arrested 13 men whom it said planned for months along with others to effect their plot. The men staked out the vacation home of the governor in Western Michigan, mapping out their escape route after kidnapping the governor. According to the FBI, the group even detonated a practice devise in preparation for their plot.

The FBI infiltrated the group on social media and monitored its activities for months through informants and special agents before making the move to arrest and charge the men. Speaking to the media in Lansing, the state capital, the governor thanked the FBI and state law enforcement agencies for their prompt action in foiling the plot and protecting her and her family. The governor called out Trump for his refusal to condemn white supremacists, saying that his refusal has motivated such actions. The men face 20 years to life imprisonment if convicted.
