FG orders tight security at borders, seaports, prisons

The Federal Government has directed heads of para-military agencies to monitor Nigeria’s borders to prevent foreigners from taking advantage of the nationwide strike to compound the security problems of the country.

Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, therefore ordered the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service to deploy more men in the boarders, airports and seaports.

Moro also directed the Controller-General of the Fire Service to place his men on red alert to handle any emergencies that might occur in any part of the country, particularly in and around public buildings.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Prisons Service was ordered to tighten security around the prisons across the country, as well as intensify internal surveillance to forestall any ugly incident.

The minister directed the Commandant-General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps to protect public property as well as to prevent possible attack on public buildings.

According to Moro, areas under state of emergency in the North should be given top attention.

The minister, who addressed the leaders of the three agencies in Abuja on Monday, noted that the protection of lives and property was important to the government.

He said no effort should be spared in protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.

He added that this was necessary to contain any emergency that could arise in the course of the ongoing protests against the fuel subsidy withdrawal.

He appealed to Nigerians to be patient, adding that the government was open to dialogue in its efforts to resolve the current impasse.

The minister called on Labour to exercise restraint in the conduct of the protests, adding that their actions must be carried out within the ambit of the law.
