FG plans more universities

BY PETER OKUTU

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, weekend, assured of the commitment of his administration towards establishing more federal universities across the six geo-political zones of the country.

The president, who gave the assurance during a civil reception organized in honour of the Federal Government’s appointees from Ebonyi State, noted that the policy for the establishment of federal universities was a continuous exercise which would engender quality and affordable education.

According to Jonathan, who was represented by the Minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed: “The siting of a new federal university in Ebonyi is deliberate. As a far-reaching measure to bring tertiary education closer to the people, the Federal Executive Council took the bold decision to create more new federal universities and Ebonyi happens to be one of the new states that were up and coming as considered so that more federal presence shall be registered in our young state.

“This is without prejudice to the fact that the policy is a continuous one and more federal universities shall be sited in more states subsequently”.

The president said the takeover of the Ebonyi Medical College and the upgrading of the Fistula Centre to a National Fistula Centre were done to ensure equitably distribution of the nation’s scare resources and projects.

He assured that the issue of dilapidated federal roads in the state would be addressed as funds owed the state for the construction of the roads would be paid by the Federal Government.

In his remarks, Governor Martin Elechi assured that federal appointees, senators and House of Representatives’ members from Ebonyi would always stand by him on issues that would promote the well-being of Nigerians.
