FG to increase teachers’ retirement age to 65

Abuja – The Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai has said that the Federal Government is considering the request made by teachers to approve 65 years as retirement age for them.
The minister who spoke in Abuja, yesterday, said that the the request made by the teachers through their umbrella body, the Nigerian Union of Teachers concerning the extension of their retirement age from 60 to 65 was already in the pipeline assuring the teachers that due process would however be followed.
The minister at a press briefing to commemorate the 2012 World Teachers Day scheduled for Friday with the theme ‘Take a Stand for Teachers’ assured that the ‘procedure must be followed and higher authorities must be convinced. The issue is in the pipeline.’
The minister, however, lamented the dearth of committed teachers in the profession and urged all the stakeholders to “encourage them with motivation, training and providing welfare packages as most people in the profession have taken to it as a last resort.”
