FG urged to halt sale of NPA’s property in UK
Latest Politics Monday, August 22nd, 2011PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to halt the sale of properties of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) in the United Kingdom.
The Senior Staff Association of Communications, Transport and Corporations (SSACTAC), NPA branch, made the call at the end of its meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday.
The president of the association, Mr Omeiza Umar, who read a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, said more revenue would accrue to the country if the properties remained unsold.
“Earlier moves to sell these houses were stopped by previous governments, because the proceeds would go as commissions and taxes to the lawyers and UK government.
“Only 40 per cent will come to the owner of the properties. We want the president to be very vigilant if his economic policies must succeed,” it said.
The communiqué also called on the president to tackle the epileptic power supply headlong.
It said without adequate power generation and constant supply of electricity, the country could not progress economically.
The communique said the right given to jetties to receive ocean-going vessels and the handing over of dockyard training school to a third party should be reversed.
According to the association, altering receiver of ocean-going vessels at jetties would bring down the revenue of the concessionaires.
“Consequently, it will bring down the revenue generation of NPA to a very drastic level; the workers are saying no. It is not part of the agreement in reforming the Nigerian ports,” it stated.
