Fight against Boko Haram: We ’re making progress –Army chief
Boko Haram, Latest Politics Thursday, February 23rd, 2012The Nigerian Army yesterday said it has made tremendous progress in the fight against terrorism, particularly the Boko Haram insurgents.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Onyeabor Ihejirika said the force would fight the sect to a standstill especially in Borno and North eastern parts of the country where the group had been carrying out its terrorist attacks.
Ihejirika said four members of the sect, who attacked a checkpoint in Kano with explosive devices and assault rifles, were arrested on Tuesday.
Ihejirika made the revelation while commissioning block of flats abandoned since 1979, but renovated by his regime to cater for the accommodation needs of Army personnel within Lagos area.
He said the force was aware of the propaganda war being initiated by the sect members especially as the security forces tried to paralyze their operations, pointing out that intimidation of the Nigerian public was part of the modus operandi of the group.
He urged Nigerians not to be intimidated by the attack by the Boko Haram sect, adding that they were making progress with the arrest being made.
Ihejirika said the force had made progress in getting details of the operations of the sect, adding that the force was now in possession of tapes and digital devices, which revealed how the sect members got their training from Al Qaeda network and how they got their lessons and indoctrination on suicide bombing.
The army chief said the attacks on military formation and security agencies by the Islamist sect were moves by the group to intimidate the Nigerian public.
He declined to mention the number of persons belonging to the sect who had been arrested.
He said the Nigerian Army remained loyal to the constitution of the Federal Republic and the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, whom he said understood the problems of the Nigerian Army and had being doing much to assist the force.
