Gunners can bounce back from Chelsea 6-0 thrashing — Wenger

Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has described Arsenal’s 6-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea as ‘horrendous’ but the Frenchman is confident his side can turn the tables when they travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Wenger’s side were humiliated by their rivals on his 1,000th game as Arsenal manager last season.

And despite an unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign, the Gunners are already six points adrift of Jose Mourinho’s side this term.

“Last year was a horrendous day,’ said Wenger ahead of his side’s trip to Chelsea. ‘We never forget it, but we have an opportunity to put it right.

“We are hugely determined and hungry to do that and I am confident we will take the chance to do it.”

A rampant Chelsea scored three goals inside 17 minutes in their March fixture while Arsenal were reduced to 10 men when referee Mark Clattenburg mistakenly sent off Kieran Gibbs after team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handled on the line.

Mourinho’s side compounded the misery by scoring a fourth shortly before the interval before adding two more in the second half to complete their biggest win against the Gunners.

Wenger celebrated his 18-year anniversary at Arsenal earlier this week with a win against Galatasaray

“It was a very bad memory but football is not made of history, it is made of performance and the next game is the one that counts,’ added Wenger, who earlier this week celebrated his 18th anniversary at the club with a 4-1 victory over Galatasaray.

“We want to go to Chelsea to win and the fact they are six points ahead makes that even bigger.

“We are two unbeaten teams, and they have been more efficient in beating teams.”
