He contributed to why I’m alive today: Obasanjo pays tribute to Jimmy Carter

By Ikenna Ngere

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has paid a heartfelt tribute to Jimmy Carter, the former U.S. President who passed away on December 29, 2024.

Speaking to Channels Television from his Abeokuta residence in Ogun State, Obasanjo expressed deep admiration for Carter, whom he credits as one of the reasons he is alive today.

Reflecting on their friendship and shared memories, Obasanjo described Carter as a steadfast ally to Nigeria and Africa, and a global advocate for justice and fairness.

Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and as a democratically elected President from 1999 to 2007, highlighted Carter’s significant contributions to strengthening Nigeria-U.S. relations during his presidency.

Carter, the 39th U.S. President, held office from 1977 to 1981 and visited Nigeria in 1978, forging a bond with Obasanjo that endured for decades.

After leaving the White House, Carter dedicated his life to championing democracy, tackling neglected health issues, and serving as a Sunday school teacher.

Born in Plains, Georgia, Carter lived a humble life, spending his final days in the same modest home he and his wife purchased in 1961.

Obasanjo lamented Carter’s passing as a profound loss, not only for Nigeria and Africa but also for the global community, which has lost a tireless advocate for equality and human rights.
