I’ll protect less privileged Nigerians, says Jonathan
Goodluck Jonathan (2010-present), Presidency Thursday, March 17th, 2011The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP),, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday, took a message of hope to the people of Kano State, pledging to protect the less-privileged members of the society.
Jonathan, who recalled that he was born to a family of poor parents, noted that if he could stand to aspire for the highest position in the land, then any Nigerian could as well aspire to any height. The declarations were made at the Polo ground Kano, during the party’s presidential campaign rally, which was held amid tight security.
Security arrangements in and out of the venue was unexpectedly tight as party supporters, including female members of the party were screened before they were allowed into the venue, which was opened to the public only minutes before the arrival of the August visitor.
Jonathan, who was at the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, paid glowing tributes to the late politician, Mallam Aminu Kano, reminding the crowd that the late political icon stood for a politics of service and unity of the country. He added that his Talakawa politics was that which not only strived to put food on the table of the poor but provided them opportunities to reach their heights.
He pledged to run a fair and transparent government which would promote peace among Nigerians and unify the country as a whole adding that if elected, his administration would improve power supply in the country, and bring back the collapsed industries in Kano, especially the leather industries and prioritize agriculture and irrigation programs in its policy thrust.
Other speakers at the event include the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na ‘abba, a Woman leader, Dr Baraka Sani, Nigeria’s Ambassador to China, Alhaji Aminu Wali, the Acting National Chairman of the party, Dr Halliru Bello among others.
Dr Jonathan, who was dressed in a white flowing gown told the modest gathering to ensure that they reclaim the state from the incumbent administration of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
Earlier In his remark, Alhaji Aminu Wali offered to correct an impression about the state adding that, “In Kano, we do not believe in the politics of ethnicity or the politics of religion” while assuring President Jonathan that Kano people will vote for him.
Similarly, the gubernatorial candidate of the party in the state, Engineer Rabiu Myusa Kwankwaso promised that they will make a 100 percent delivery the PDP in the state, come 2011 elections adding that they have since identified the factors that led to their defeat in 2003 and have taken steps to ensure that it is note repeated.
