Thirteen nationals of Niger Republic are to be repatriated by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) following their arrest by the Nigeria Police in Kano State. The Kano State Police Commissioner, Mr Idris Ibrahim, said the illegal aliens were arrested at 11:30 p.m. on the 5th of May, 2012, following a raid by the police at Beriut Road in the state capital. The raid was to checkmate criminal activities in the area, he added.
He disclosed that upon interrogation the suspects were discovered to have come from Niger Republic without valid entry documents to back up their stay in Nigeria. He added that besides this, it was equally discovered that the suspects had no means of livelihood and without known residential addresses in the state.
He lamented that given their disturbing backgrounds, it was feared that these kind of aliens could easily be recruited by ill-minded persons to cause mischief in the state, adding that their case had been transferred to the Nigeria Immigration Service for necessary action.
“We have equally requested that they be repatriated to their home country given that it is not in the best interest of Nigeria for these suspects to remain in the country,” the police chief said. A large population of Nigeriens are resident in the state, but it is doubtful if a majority of these immigrants entered the country with any documentation.
Kano State Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Dr Emmanuel Brasca Udo Ifeadi, could not be reached for comment, but Sunday Sun gathered that in recent times, the irregular activities of immigrants in the state had elicited fresh concerns among the authorities.
It would be recalled that a few days back the NIS in the state took into custody 45 Chinese nationals following alleged irregularities at the Kantin Kwari Textile market in the state.wp_posts
