Kano blast: Luxury bus operators demand N495m compensation

A week after suicide bombers attacked a motor park in Kano, killing over 20 people, luxury bus operators have demanded N495m from the Federal Government as compensation for the loss of nine buses during the attack.

The operators, under the aegis of the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria, in a petition to President Goodluck Jonathan, also requested for 24-hour police protection at the Kano motor park and other parts of the country where they were operating.

Although they stated that the number of casualties could not be ascertained, they demanded that the government should foot the medical bill of all injured victims of the attack.

The association’s letter to the President was titled: ‘Petition against unprovoked attacks on our members and passengers at luxury bus garage, Kano and some other northern parts of Nigeria, an appeal for protection, redress and compensation.’

The President, ALBON, Mr. Ejike Okoli, and Secretary, Mr. Frank Nneji, signed the petition, which was also copied the President of the Senate, Mr. David Mark; and Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwa.

The body said five buses were burnt in the March 18 bomb blast, while four others had earlier been destroyed in a similar attack.

It gave the unit cost of each bus as N55m.
